Studies have shown that religiousness can affect people, these ways have been tested in repetition. Over the decades views and outcomes have fluctuated, however after years of study it has final been brought to a focal point that can be taken in a more scientific aspect than in the recent past. Religiousness has been shown to effect mental, physical, and social health in both positive and negative ways.
Religiousness has been known to effect the mental health of terminally ill patients, or people that are in less than adequate health conditions. Over the past few decades these tests on Religiousness and mental health have been essentially shunned. “Since Freud and other famous mental health scholars have put forth their postulations concerning the neurotic influences of religion in mental health, many of the 20th century mental health professionals have been influenced to hold skeptical and even hostile

attitudes toward religion. However, the past two decades have increasingly found more
empirical evidence supporting the beneficial effects of religiousness on mental health that apparently contrasts with the postulations of Freud” (Yeung Wai-Keung, Jerf). Although these studies have been widely looked down upon, it has also been shown that in the past centuries that Churches had a large part in helping the mentally ill. “The relationship between religion and mental health has been debated for centuries. History shows that religious organizations were often the first to offer compassionate care to the vulnerable
groups, including the medically ill, the elderly and the disabled. The first hospitals for patients with mental health problems established in the fourteenth century were church-sponsored and priest-managed” (Yeung Wai-Keung, Jerf). Along with the mentally ill, those who are unstable, religiousness has also played a enormous part in the elderly population. Through the years studies for religiousness on the senior population has increased and has had promising results. “Recent research revealed that people become more religious when they are getting older. In comparison with young people, older people think that religion is more important for them, especially for those who are toward the end of life. There exist different explanations as to why older persons are apparently more religious than younger people, such as for psychological compensation after retirement. Whichever explanations are more salient in depicting the relationship, religious involvement is obviously a critical factor for older people to cope better and have better social and psychological adjustments while facing the debilitating process of aging. “ (Yeung Wai-Keung, Jerf). Religion can also alter someone’s thoughts, making them partake in less dangerous activities. “The positive effects of religion include less

physical illness and depression, lower mortality rates and a reduction in risky health-
related behaviors.” (The positive effects on health).
Religiousness has not only been tied to positive mental health, but it has also been linked to positive effects on physical health. “Several studies indicate that people with strong religious and spiritual beliefs heal faster from surgery, are less anxious and depressed, have lower blood pressure, and cope better with chronic illness (e.g., cancer)” (The positive effects on health). Many think that religiousness only helps stop a
physical or mental illness that is already in motion, however many recent studies have shown that it helps prevent diseases or poor mental stability. “Religious participation is consistently found to be associated with lower prevalence of physical illness and there is some evidence that religious participation affects the course and outcome of disease. Furthermore, longitudinal studies have demonstrated that ‘attending religious service is associated with decreased risk of the onset of disability‘” (Positive effects on health). As well as making people more healthy and more resistant to disease, religiousness has also been very closely related with a more comfortable life. “Research suggests that spirituality and religion may play a bigger role in the healing process than previously believed by the medical community. Spirituality elicits a relaxation response (slowed heartbeat, lower blood pressure, and reduction in stress and anxiety), which has been regarded as a factor that improves quality of life.” (Positive effects on health).
It has been shown time and time again that religion can effect mental and physical health, nonetheless the largest effect that religion has had is on social health, and unfortunately they have all been mostly negative, however there are still some positive

aspects. The first positive aspect would most likely have to be the impact it has had on people’s moral constitution, a prime example of that would be John Newton, who was a slave trader. “When a ship nearly foundered in a storm, he gave his life to Christ. Later he was promoted to captain of a slave ship. Commanding a slave vessel seems like a strange place to find a new Christian. But at last the inhuman aspects of the business began to pall on him, and he left the sea for good. While working as a tide surveyor he studied for the ministry, and for the last 43 years of his life preached the gospel in Olney and London. At 82, Newton said, “My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things, that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Savior.”” ( Ericson, Karl).
Now religion can have it’s negative effects, and most of these sprout up in the social area of the health spectrum. Many religions have lead to unending or absolutely devastating conflict. “There are good people of all religions. Many of these people focus on the good commandments of their religions and find a way to reinterpret or ignore the bad ones. Unfortunately there are many who take the negative command of their religions literally. Such commands can lead to hatred of the non-believer and can create a vicious cycle that leads to more and more hate” (Ericson, Karl). Religion has ended in multitudes of death, and in just raw fights because of someone’s beliefs. “Arthur Shelton who killed his friend Larry Hooper because Larry didn't believe. (Detroit Free Press 12/29/05)
Before the shooting, Hooper had told Shelton that Shelton couldn't say anything to convince him to believe in God, according to police Shelton left the room, took off his shirt, shaved his face and tried again to convince Hooper there is a God. But at that point, Shelton had a 12-gauge shotgun. "How long would it take you to believe in God?"

Shelton said he asked Hooper. "Not until I hear Gabriel blow his horn," replied Hooper. Hooper tipped his hat and Shelton fired the shotgun at Hooper's head. "I did it because he is evil; he was not a believer," Shelton said” (Ericson, Karl). A person was killed because his friend found out that he did not have the same beliefs as him and killed him in cold blood. There was a cult in India called the thuggee cult, that killed many for the sole reason of religion. “According to 19th century writings about thuggee, the will of the goddess by whose command and in whose honor they followed their calling was revealed to them through a very complicated system of omens…They believed each murder prevented Kali's (their goddess's) arrival for 1000 years...Kali represented destruction and death. Apparently the Thugs feared that when Kali came she'd bring death and destruction. Therefore by appeasing her by robbing and killing victims they were in effect saving the world. According to the Guinness Book of Records the Thuggee cult was responsible for approximately 2,000,000 deaths” (Ericson, Karl). Religion has not just effected the fact of violence and war, but it has also effected children, and their education, a section of a newspaper article shows that indefinitely. “school board members opposed adoption of a controversial social studies textbook at an August board meeting, some residents accused the board of promoting a right-wing Christian agenda.” (Winnick, Pamela R.). This shows that with religious influence even the aspect of education can be altered.
Religiousness can have effects on mental, physical and social health, that no one could have anticipated. It can help stabilize or at least car for the mentally ill. It can prevent or hinder disease and sickness in the physically ill or physically vulnerable.
Hill 6
Religiousness can even effect that we interact socially, or handle social situations we are not equipped to handle. Religion has effect on our everyday lives, in both positive and negative ways.
